About the role

Job summary

Security Services Group (SSG) is the MOD’s Technical Authority for electronic and physical security providing in-house expert advice, design, installation and maintenance of electronic and physical security systems across Government, prioritised towards Secret and Above Secret, and items Attractive to Criminal and Terrorist Organisations (ACTO). SSG is part of GUARDIAN and is positioned within Standing Joint Command to support UK homeland security and resilience.

With an FTE of 325, SSG provides technical specialist ‘consultancy’ advice to projects to support the creation of design specifications through to commissioning; project management and delivery with through life maintenance; strategic and tactical compliance assurance reviews and audits across the business; an assured government use only Intruder Detection System built in-house; and security furniture services. Head of SSG is also the MOD’s Head of Specialism for Physical Security across the MOD (part of the Government Security Profession).

SSG’s Operational Delivery teams are the MOD’s specialist in-house security providers, delivering project management, design, installation and 24/7, 365 days a year maintenance of all aspects of electronic and physical security, with a global reach. SSG’s work is independently audited to ensure, ISO 9001:2015 and NSI compliance and accreditation as well as MOD’s own internal compliance regime. This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

We are looking for a skilled Manufacturing Assembler to join SSG as a Workshop Technician SZ4 at MOD Sealand. The ideal candidate will have experience working with electrical components and a keen eye for detail. Reporting directly to the PDS Production Manager, you will be part of a team of technical specialists responsible for producing SSG’s in-house intrusion detection system AC12M.

As a Workshop Technician SZ4, your main duties will involve assembling / fabricating security-related equipment, conducting pre- and post-production tests, verifying functionality, diagnosing faults, and repairing electronic sub-assemblies at a component level. You will also assist in Factory Acceptance Testing of manufactured systems and engage in problem-solving within your specialist field.

In addition to your technical responsibilities, you will provide information, advice, and guidance to the tech support team as required. You may also accompany senior officers to internal and external meetings to offer specialist support and advice. This role offers the opportunity to support projects which safeguard UK Defence and Government sites. Specific system training will be provided to support your role.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Manufacturing of SSG’s in-house intrusion detection system AC12M. Responsible for build quality of all output in line with the industry standards and operating instructions.
  • Testing of electronic equipment, and items associated with the AC12M technical product library.
  • Conducting quality checks and audits of requested AC12M panel builds.
  • Support Production Manager with ordering materials from suppliers and providing equipment lists.
  • Providing technical assistance at all levels and building solutions to technical and design problems
  • Ensuring all job-related administration is accurate and reported in a timely way.
  • Adherence to work-related and site related health and safety guidelines.
  • Participating in an on-call rota to provide 24-hour emergency cover for the service
  • Support to the training of SZ3 apprentices.
  • As required support to SSG operations with system maintenance and installations.

Person specification

Essential Skills, Experience, Qualifications, Memberships & Licences

  • Full UK Driving Licence.
  • NVQ / SZQ Level 3 in Electronic Security Systems (IDS, VSS, etc) or equivalent. Or can demonstrate working towards qualification.
  • Awareness of VSS, ACSS, PIDS and SMS security systems.
  • 3 years’ experience in manufacture, repair, and/or testing of electronic systems.
  • IT proficiency in standard MS windows-based applications.
  • Problem solving skills.
  • Experience reading complex designs of systems, including schematics and PCB designs.

Desirable Skills, Experience, Qualifications, Memberships & Licences

  • Membership held with Engineering Council and or Security Institute.
  • ONC/HNC/NVQ level qualification or significant relevant experience in Electronics.
  • Knowledge of technical drawing packages for example AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of serial communications.
  • Experience with integrating OEM and M2M modules.
  • Knowledge of product safety and quality assurance considerations.
  • A working knowledge of installing and maintaining data/IP networks.
  • IPC-610 certification.
