About the role

Job summary

The Northern Ireland Garrison Support Unit (NIGSU) is responsible for the sustainment and support of the military garrison in Northern Ireland across personnel, infrastructure, training and logistical functions.

The NIGSU Training Department is a small team of 20 staff who look after the infrastructure and training on behalf of HQ 38 (Irish) Bde, with a central focus on delivery of security & guarding training to around the 500 military and Civil Service staff of the Northern Ireland Security Guard Service (NISGS) and Northern Ireland Guard Force (NIGF).

We are looking for an experienced instructor and trainer who will join a team of 4 NISGS trainers delivering foundation (recruit), continuation and supervisor training across a range of disciplines to the NISGS. You will work closely with a range of interlocuters including NISGS planners, Unit managers and the military training team.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

You will deliver and evaluate the NISGS Foundation, Continuation and Supervisor courses in accordance with the Training Requirements Authority & Training Delivery Authority and HQ NIGSU policy.

Main responsibilities include:

  • Delivery and content of NISGS training courses, as directed by the NIGSU Training Officer.
  • Delivery and design of continuation training as directed by the NIGSU Training Officer.
  • Preparation, updating and evaluation of lesson plans.
  • Initial and refresher Firearms training for recruits and trained personnel to MOD standards and legal framework.
  • Implementation of orders, instructions and directives.
  • Organisation of, and liaison with, visiting instructors.
  • Risk assessments for all training activities.
  • Undertake validation of NISGS unit training given, as directed.
  • Maintain currency of all training qualifications.
  • To undertake other duties as required by NIGSU Training Officer within remit and scope of role and grade.

Essential Skills Required:

  • Proven experience in delivering structured training and instruction to groups and individuals, ensuring learning objectives are achieved.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with learners, colleagues and stakeholders at all levels.
  • Experience of developing, reviewing and evaluating training materials, lesson plans and training activities to maintain quality standards.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment whilst managing competing priorities and delivering results independently.
  • Knowledge and experience of risk assessment, safety compliance and adherence to organisational policies, procedures and training regulations.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. The post does not offer relocation expenses.

External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
