Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax is one of HMRC's largest transformation programmes. It is changing how millions of taxpayers keep digital records and report their income, helping to create a more modern, efficient and effective tax system. The programme is being introduced in phases, with further expansion planned in the coming years.

Job description

We are looking for an experienced stakeholder engagement professional to lead HMRC's engagement with the tax agent community. Tax agents and advisers play a vital role in supporting taxpayers and are key partners in the successful delivery of Making Tax Digital. As the successful candidate, you will build relationships with tax agents, professional bodies, software providers and other external stakeholders, helping them understand and prepare for changes.

You will be a visible ambassador for the programme, representing HMRC at conferences, webinars and stakeholder events, while ensuring external insight helps shape our approach. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with strong technical knowledge, excellent communication skills and the credibility to engage confidently with the tax profession on complex policy and operational matters.

  • Translate complex policy and technical requirements into clear, practical and accessible guidance for external audiences.
  • Develop and deliver stakeholder engagement strategies that improve awareness and readiness for programme change, using stakeholder insight to inform decisions, manage risks and improve outcomes.

Essential Criteria

  • Proven ability to interpret complex tax, policy or technical requirements and translate them into clear, practical and accessible messages for external audiences.
  • Excellent communication and influencing skills, including experience representing organisations at a variety of stakeholder events, and responding confidently to challenge.

  • Significant experience of influencing senior external stakeholders and building effective partnerships that support the successful delivery of organisational priorities.
  • Fully qualified Accountant and/or Tax Adviser (ACA, ACCA, CTA/ATT) and a member of a relevant professional body (ICAEW, ICAS, CAI, ACCA, CIOT, ATT, CIMA, CIPFA), or able to demonstrate an equivalent level of professional expertise through substantial relevant experience. Candidates must be able to demonstrate significant knowledge of Income Tax Self Assessment, digital accounting practices and Making Tax Digital
