Are you passionate about supporting young people who have struggled to engage with mainstream education?
We are working with a welcoming and supportive Alternative Provision in Worthing, which is looking for a confident, positive and resilient Learning Support Assistant to join their team.
The provision supports secondary-aged students who may have been excluded from education, experienced school refusal, or struggled to access mainstream education due to mental health challenges, SEND or unmet additional needs.
This is a role where relationships really matter. You will be working with students who may have had difficult experiences within education, so the ability to build trust, establish positive relationships and provide consistent encouragement is essential.
The Role
As a Learning Support Assistant, you will:

Build positive and trusting relationships with secondary-aged students.

Act as a consistent and positive role model for young people.

Support students who may have experienced exclusion, school refusal, anxiety, mental health challenges or SEND.

Encourage students to engage with learning and develop their confidence.

Support students with their emotional wellbeing and day-to-day needs.

Help students develop important life skills, independence and social skills.

Support PSHE and other personal development sessions.

Encourage positive behaviour through clear boundaries, consistency and a calm approach.

Help students develop the skills they need to progress into further education, employment and adult life.

Support enrichment activities and sessions delivered by professionals and members of the local community.

Work closely with colleagues to ensure students feel safe, valued and supported.

What We’re Looking For
The school is looking for someone who is:

Confident, approachable and resilient.

Excellent at building relationships with young people.

Patient, understanding and able to remain calm when faced with challenging behaviour.

A strong communicator who can set clear and consistent boundaries.

Passionate about helping young people overcome barriers to education.

Able to act as a positive role model and provide encouragement and stability.

Comfortable working with students who may present with challenging behaviour or disengagement.

Experience within SEND, SEMH, mental health, youth work, sports coaching, education or pastoral support would be highly beneficial.
A background in sports could be particularly valuable, as the ability to engage students through their interests and build relationships outside of traditional classroom learning is important in this setting.
A Different Approach to Education
This provision does not follow the traditional National Curriculum. Instead, the focus is on helping young people re-engage with education while developing the practical and personal skills they need for their future.
Students take part in life skills, PSHE, personal development and enrichment activities, alongside opportunities to hear from people working within the wider community.
The aim is to help students recognise their strengths, rebuild their confidence and develop the skills they need to move forward positively.
