About This Primary School Teaching Assistant Role

As a 1:1 SEND Teaching Assistant, you will play a vital role in supporting a child with additional learning needs throughout the school day. You will work closely with teachers, SEND staff and parents to provide consistent, personalised support that enables the pupil to thrive both inside and outside the classroom.
Key Responsibilities of the 1:1 Teaching Assistant
As a Primary School Teaching Assistant, your duties will include:
- Providing tailored 1:1 support to a pupil with additional learning needs
- Supporting classroom learning and adapting activities to meet individual needs
- Encouraging social, emotional and academic development through positive reinforcement
- Helping the child build confidence, independence and communication skills
- Assisting the class teacher with engaging and accessible learning activities
- Implementing strategies to remove barriers to learning and improve pupil progress
- Working collaboratively with teachers, SENDCOs and parents to ensure consistent support
- Promoting a safe, nurturing and inclusive classroom environment

Person Specification
The ideal candidate will have:
- Experience working with children in a school or educational setting
- Previous experience as a Teaching Assistant, SEND Teaching Assistant or 1:1 Support Assistant is desirable
- A patient, caring and resilient attitude
- Strong communication and teamwork skills
- The ability to use initiative and adapt to different situations
- A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs
- A childcare, education or SEND-related qualification is beneficial but not essential
