The Opportunity

We are supporting an NHS Trust in North West England with the appointment of a Locum Consultant Cardiologist.

This is an excellent opportunity for a suitably qualified Consultant Cardiologist to join an established NHS Cardiology service and provide high-quality specialist cardiac care across inpatient, outpatient and on-call services.

The successful candidate will work as part of a multidisciplinary Cardiology team, contributing to the delivery of safe, effective and patient-centred care.

The Role

The successful candidate will provide Consultant-level Cardiology services across the Trust's inpatient, outpatient and on-call services.

The role will include:

  • Participating in the 1:8 Cardiology on-call rota
  • Providing on-call cover across Monday–Thursday and Friday–Sunday periods
  • Undertaking triage of e-A&G (electronic Advice & Guidance) referrals for Cardiology
  • Acting as the ward-based Cardiology Consultant on a 1:8-week rota
  • Providing triage of GP referrals while acting as the ward Consultant
  • Undertaking two new patient Cardiology clinics per week when not on call or acting as ward Consultant
  • Undertaking one Rapid Access Angina Clinic per week when not on call or acting as ward Consultant
  • Providing specialist assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with cardiac conditions
  • Supporting inpatient Cardiology services and providing senior clinical decision-making
  • Providing specialist advice to referring clinicians and other members of the multidisciplinary team
  • Contributing to multidisciplinary working and clinical discussions
  • Maintaining high standards of clinical governance and patient safety
  • Supporting junior medical staff and colleagues where appropriate
  • Contributing to service improvement, audit and governance activities where required

On-Call Requirements

For on-call purposes, the successful candidate must be able to undertake:

  • Temporary cardiac pacing
  • Pericardiocentesis

There is no requirement for PCI, pacing or cardiac imaging sessions as part of the scheduled clinical workload. No dedicated sessions for these services will be provided.

What We're Looking For

Essential Requirements

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Cardiology, or relevant experience for a locum appointment
  • Previous NHS Consultant Cardiologist experience
  • Strong general Cardiology experience
  • Ability to independently manage acute and inpatient Cardiology patients
  • Competence in temporary cardiac pacing
  • Competence in pericardiocentesis
  • Ability to participate safely and effectively in a 1:8 on-call rota
  • Experience with referral triage, including e-A&G and GP referrals
  • Ability to work independently and effectively within a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent clinical decision-making and communication skills
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred cardiac care
  • Availability to commence ASAP

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous experience working within an NHS Cardiology department
  • Experience managing a broad range of acute and general Cardiology presentations
  • Experience participating in Rapid Access Angina or similar rapid-access cardiac clinics
  • Experience in clinical audit, governance or service improvement
  • Teaching and supervision experience
