The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry to support a well-established General Adult Mental Health Service in the South West of England.

This opportunity offers a full-time locum contract with a Monday–Friday, 09:00–17:00 schedule, providing structured and consistent work within a dynamic multidisciplinary team. It is ideally suited to experienced consultants who are confident managing a broad range of adult mental health presentations and providing senior clinical leadership across community and/or inpatient settings.

You will play a key role in delivering high-quality psychiatric care, managing complex clinical cases, supporting service development, and working collaboratively with multidisciplinary colleagues to achieve positive outcomes for patients.

What You'll Be Doing

• Provide consultant-level leadership within a General Adult Psychiatry service
• Undertake comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning for adult patients
• Take clinical responsibility for patients presenting with a wide range of mental health conditions and complex needs
• Manage presentations including psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, severe depression, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and dual diagnosis cases
• Lead multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical reviews, and care planning discussions
• Conduct risk assessments and develop effective risk management strategies
• Work collaboratively with nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals
• Liaise with community mental health teams, crisis services, primary care, and external agencies to ensure continuity of care
• Support admission avoidance initiatives where appropriate and facilitate effective discharge planning
• Prepare Mental Health Act reports and attend tribunal hearings when required
• Supervise junior doctors and contribute to education, training, and professional development activities
• Participate in clinical governance, audit, service development, and quality improvement projects
• Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical records
• Uphold the highest standards of patient safety, professionalism, and clinical care

What We're Looking For

• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or equivalent qualification (CESR)
• Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility)
• Section 12 Approval
• Approved Clinician Status (highly desirable)
• Significant UK experience working at Consultant level within General Adult Psychiatry
• Experience managing complex and high-risk mental health presentations
• Strong understanding of community and secondary care mental health pathways
• Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Experience with Mental Health Act assessments and tribunal processes
• Excellent leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
• Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
• Valid Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship available)
