The OpportunityWe are currently seeking a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Learning Disabilities to support a specialist Learning Disability Mental Health Service in London.
This opportunity offers a full-time locum contract with a Monday–Friday, 09:00–17:00 schedule, providing structured and consistent work within a highly collaborative multidisciplinary team. It is ideally suited to experienced consultants who are passionate about improving outcomes for people with learning disabilities and complex mental health needs while providing senior clinical leadership across the service.
You will play a key role in assessing, diagnosing, and managing complex psychiatric presentations, supporting patients, families, carers, and care providers to deliver high-quality, person-centred care.

- Provide consultant-level leadership within a specialist Learning Disability Psychiatry service
- Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning for adults with learning disabilities
- Take clinical responsibility for patients with complex mental health needs, challenging behaviours, and neurodevelopmental conditions
- Manage presentations including psychosis, anxiety disorders, depression, bipolar disorder, autism spectrum conditions, behavioural disorders, and dual diagnosis cases
- Lead multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical reviews, and person-centred care planning
- Undertake complex risk assessments and develop effective risk management strategies
- Work collaboratively with nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals
- Liaise with families, carers, residential providers, local authorities, and community services to ensure coordinated care
- Support Care, Education and Treatment Reviews (CETRs) and work to reduce avoidable admissions where appropriate
- Provide expert advice on the Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, safeguarding procedures, and best-interest decision-making
- Prepare Mental Health Act reports and attend tribunal hearings where required
- Supervise junior doctors and contribute to teaching, training, and professional development activities
- Participate in clinical governance, audit, service development, and quality improvement initiatives
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
- Uphold the highest standards of patient safety, dignity, and person-centred care
- Full GMC registration with licence to practise
- CCT in Psychiatry of Learning Disability or equivalent qualification (CESR)
- Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility)
- Section 12 Approval
- Approved Clinician Status (highly desirable)
- Significant UK experience working at Consultant level within Learning Disability Psychiatry
- Experience managing complex mental health presentations in individuals with learning disabilities
- Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, safeguarding legislation, and relevant care pathways
- Experience working within community and/or inpatient learning disability services
- Experience with Mental Health Act assessments, tribunal reports, and statutory processes
- Excellent leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
- Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
- Valid Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship available)
