The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Old Age Psychiatry to support a specialist Older Adults Mental Health Service in Yorkshire.

This opportunity offers a full-time locum contract with a Monday–Friday, 09:00–17:00 schedule, providing structured and consistent work within a multidisciplinary older adults service. It is ideally suited to experienced consultants who are passionate about delivering high-quality mental health care to older adults and confident managing complex psychiatric presentations associated with ageing, cognitive impairment, and physical health comorbidities.

You will provide senior clinical leadership within the service, overseeing patient care, supporting multidisciplinary colleagues, and ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and person-centred treatment plans.

What You'll Be Doing

• Provide consultant-level leadership within an Old Age Psychiatry service
• Conduct comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning for older adults
• Take clinical responsibility for patients presenting with a range of mental health conditions affecting later life
• Manage complex presentations including dementia, depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis, delirium, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), and co-existing physical health conditions
• Lead multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical reviews, and care planning discussions
• Undertake complex risk assessments and develop effective risk management plans
• Work collaboratively with community mental health teams, memory assessment services, inpatient teams, primary care providers, and social services
• Liaise with families, carers, care homes, and partner agencies to support coordinated care and positive patient outcomes
• Provide expertise in capacity assessments, best-interest decision-making, and safeguarding processes
• Prepare Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act reports and attend tribunal hearings where required
• Supervise junior doctors and contribute to teaching, training, and professional development activities
• Participate in clinical governance, audit, service development, and quality improvement initiatives
• Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
• Uphold the highest standards of patient safety, dignity, and person-centred care

What We're Looking For

• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• CCT in Old Age Psychiatry or equivalent qualification (CESR)
• Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility)
• Section 12 Approval
• Approved Clinician Status (highly desirable)
• Significant UK experience working at Consultant level within Old Age Psychiatry
• Experience managing complex psychiatric presentations in older adults
• Strong understanding of dementia care, cognitive assessment, and older adult mental health pathways
• Knowledge of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and safeguarding legislation
• Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams
• Experience with Mental Health Act assessments, tribunal reports, and statutory processes
• Excellent leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
• Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
• Valid Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship available)
