The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in General Adult Psychiatry to support a well-established General Adult Mental Health Service in Wales.

This opportunity offers a full-time locum contract with a Monday-Friday, 09:00-17:00 working pattern, providing structured and consistent work within a multidisciplinary mental health team. It is ideally suited to experienced consultants who are confident managing a broad range of adult mental health conditions while delivering senior clinical leadership and high-quality, patient-centred care.

You will work closely with multidisciplinary colleagues across community and inpatient pathways, providing expert psychiatric assessment, treatment planning, risk management, and support for patients with complex mental health needs.

What You'll Be Doing

• Provide consultant-level leadership within a General Adult Psychiatry service
• Undertake comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning for adult patients
• Take clinical responsibility for patients presenting with a wide range of mental health conditions and complex needs
• Manage presentations including psychosis, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, personality disorders, and dual diagnosis cases
• Lead multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical reviews, and care planning discussions
• Conduct risk assessments and develop effective risk management strategies
• Work collaboratively with nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals
• Liaise with primary care services, crisis teams, inpatient units, and community mental health teams to ensure continuity of care
• Support admission avoidance initiatives, recovery planning, and effective discharge arrangements
• Prepare Mental Health Act reports and attend tribunal hearings where required
• Supervise junior doctors and contribute to training, teaching, and professional development activities
• Participate in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and service development projects
• Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
• Uphold the highest standards of patient safety, clinical care, and professional practice

What We're Looking For

• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or equivalent qualification (CESR)
• Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility)
• Section 12 Approval
• Approved Clinician Status (highly desirable)
• Significant UK experience working at Consultant level within General Adult Psychiatry
• Experience managing complex and high-risk mental health presentations
• Strong understanding of community and secondary care mental health pathways
• Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary teams
• Experience with Mental Health Act assessments, tribunal reports, and statutory processes
• Excellent leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
• Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
• Valid Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship available)
