The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in Old Age Psychiatry to support a specialist Older Adults Mental Health Service in the East of England.

This opportunity offers a full-time locum contract with a Monday-Friday, 09:00-17:00 working pattern, providing structured and consistent work within a multidisciplinary older adults service. It is ideally suited to experienced consultants who are passionate about delivering high-quality mental health care to older adults and confident managing complex psychiatric presentations associated with ageing, dementia, and co-existing physical health conditions.

You will provide senior clinical leadership within the service, overseeing patient care, supporting multidisciplinary colleagues, and ensuring the delivery of safe, effective, and person-centred treatment plans for older adults across community and/or inpatient settings.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Provide consultant-level leadership within an Old Age Psychiatry service
  • Undertake comprehensive psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning for older adults
  • Take clinical responsibility for patients presenting with a wide range of mental health conditions affecting later life
  • Manage complex presentations including dementia, depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis, delirium, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), and age-related cognitive disorders
  • Lead multidisciplinary team meetings, clinical reviews, ward rounds (where applicable), and care planning discussions
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop effective risk management strategies
  • Work collaboratively with nurses, psychologists, occupational therapists, social workers, geriatric medicine teams, and other healthcare professionals
  • Liaise with families, carers, care homes, primary care providers, and community services to ensure continuity of care
  • Undertake Mental Capacity Act assessments and contribute to best-interest decision-making processes
  • Prepare Mental Health Act reports and attend tribunal hearings where required
  • Supervise junior doctors and contribute to teaching, training, and professional development activities
  • Participate in clinical governance, audit, service development, and quality improvement initiatives
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
  • Uphold the highest standards of patient safety, dignity, and person-centred care
What We're Looking For
  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • CCT in Old Age Psychiatry or equivalent qualification (CESR)
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility)
  • Section 12 Approval
  • Approved Clinician Status (highly desirable)
  • Significant UK experience working at Consultant level within Old Age Psychiatry
  • Experience managing complex psychiatric presentations in older adults, including dementia and cognitive impairment
  • Strong understanding of the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, safeguarding legislation, and older adults care pathways
  • Experience working within community and/or inpatient older adult mental health services
  • Experience with Mental Health Act assessments, tribunal reports, and statutory processes
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and clinical decision-making skills
  • Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary and multi-agency teams
  • Commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care
  • Valid Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship available)
