The Opportunity

We are supporting an NHS Trust in the East of England with the appointment of a Locum Consultant Gastroenterologist for a full rota position.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Consultant Gastroenterologist to provide specialist gastroenterology services, including urgent endoscopy for bleeding patients and the assessment and management of acutely unwell inpatients.

The successful candidate will work on-site and undertake the weekend on-call commitment, supporting the Trust's Gastroenterology service and ensuring continuity of high-quality patient care.

The Role

The successful candidate will provide Consultant-level Gastroenterology cover throughout the weekend assignment.

The role will include:

  • Attending on-site from 08:00 each morning
  • Performing urgent bleeder endoscopy cases
  • Assessing and managing acutely unwell patients on the ward
  • Providing Consultant-level gastroenterology advice and clinical decision-making
  • Taking responsibility for the Gastroenterology on-call service following the morning clinical commitments
  • Managing urgent and emergency gastroenterology presentations
  • Working collaboratively with the wider multidisciplinary team
  • Supporting safe and effective patient flow and clinical management
  • Maintaining appropriate clinical documentation and standards of governance

What We're Looking For

Essential Requirements

  • Full GMC registration with licence to practise
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register in Gastroenterology, or relevant experience for a locum appointment
  • Previous NHS Consultant Gastroenterology experience
  • Experience in managing acute and emergency gastroenterology patients
  • Competence and recent experience in urgent/emergency endoscopy, including bleeding patients
  • Experience undertaking Consultant-level on-call commitments
  • Ability to work independently in a busy acute hospital environment
  • Excellent clinical decision-making and communication skills
  • Availability for the full weekend assignment

Desirable Requirements

  • Previous experience providing weekend Gastroenterology on-call cover
  • Broad experience in acute Gastroenterology
  • Experience working within a multidisciplinary acute hospital team
  • Teaching and supervision experience
  • Experience in clinical governance, audit or service improvement
