The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Locum Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry to support a general adult inpatient mental health service in the East of England.

This opportunity offers a full-time locum contract with a Monday–Friday, 09:00–17:00 structure, providing consistent and structured work within a general adult inpatient setting. It is well suited to experienced consultants who are confident leading clinical teams, managing complex cases, and maintaining high standards of care within a busy ward environment.

You will take a senior leadership role within the multidisciplinary team, overseeing clinical decision-making, supporting junior doctors, and ensuring safe, effective patient care across the service.

What You’ll Be Doing

• Provide consultant-level leadership and oversight within a general adult inpatient setting
• Deliver high-quality psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, and treatment planning
• Take clinical responsibility for patients on the ward, including complex cases
• Lead ward rounds and contribute to effective patient flow and discharge planning
• Prepare and present Mental Health Act Tribunal reports and attend hearings
• Supervise and support junior medical staff and contribute to their development
• Work collaboratively with nursing staff, AHPs, and the wider MDT
• Ensure accurate, timely, and compliant clinical documentation
• Uphold high standards of patient safety, governance, and clinical practice

What We’re Looking For

• Full GMC registration with licence to practise
• CCT in General Adult Psychiatry or equivalent (CESR)
• Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (or eligibility)
• Section 12 approval
• Approved Clinician status (desirable but highly advantageous)
• Extensive UK experience within general adult inpatient psychiatry
• Proven ability to work at consultant level within a multidisciplinary team
• Experience managing MHA Tribunals
• Strong leadership, clinical judgement, and communication skills
• Valid Right to Work in the UK (no visa sponsorship available)
