Brentwood Borough Council is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Trainee Arboricultural Officer to join our Green Spaces Team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a keen interest in trees, biodiversity, and the protection of our public open spaces to begin a rewarding career in arboriculture.
Working alongside experienced professionals, you will gain practical knowledge and specialist skills while helping to care for the borough’s trees, woodlands, parks and green infrastructure. If you are passionate about the environment and eager to learn, this role offers the chance to make a real difference to the local landscape and community.
As our Trainee Arboricultural Officer, you will:
- Support tree inspections and surveys across parks, open spaces, woodlands and housing land.
- Assist with maintaining tree records and learning how to use tree management systems to support inspection and work programmes.
- Develop an understanding of tree legislation, biodiversity, and best practice in arboricultural management.
- Help prepare reports, risk assessments and work schedules under the guidance of experienced colleagues.
- Work with contractors, colleagues and stakeholders to help deliver safe and effective tree management across the borough.
- Gain experience in responding to enquiries and supporting the protection and enhancement of public open spaces.
- Contribute to wider environmental and biodiversity projects that help improve the borough’s green spaces.
- Take part in a structured training programme designed to build your technical knowledge and practical arboricultural skills.
You will bring:
- A genuine interest in trees, arboriculture, biodiversity and the protection of public open spaces.
- A positive attitude, willingness to learn and commitment to developing a career in arboriculture.
- Good communication skills and the ability to work well with colleagues, contractors and members of the public.
- A practical and organised approach, with confidence using Microsoft Office and learning digital systems.
- The ability to work both outdoors and in an office environment, adapting to changing priorities.
- A full driving licence and access to a vehicle is essential.
