Senior Electrical Power Systems Engineer — Nuclear (BWRX-300 SMR)
Location: Wilmington, North Carolina (Fully Remote) Work Model: Remote, USA Job Type: Contract Duration: 1 Year Openings: 15 Rate: $65–107/hour (W2) + Benefits Hours: 40 hours/week Project: Nuclear
Role Summary
Senior Electrical Power Systems engineering role responsible for the design of electrical power systems supporting the BWRX-300 Small Modular Reactor. This involves the design, analysis, procurement, and integration of electrical power systems — ranging from the main generator and grid connection, through the in-plant distribution system, down to end-use loads.
Essential Responsibilities
- System Architecture — Lead the design and integration of SC1/Class 1E (safety-related), SC2, and SC3 electrical systems, including Medium Voltage (MV) and Low Voltage (LV) distribution.
- Analysis & Modeling — Perform complex electrical studies such as load flow, short circuit, motor starting, and protective relay coordination using ETAP software, applying ANSI/IEC standards.
- Engineering Deliverables — Prepare deliverables including Requirements Specifications, Electrical Load Lists, One-Lines, Calculations, Schematics, and 3-Line drawings. Ensure deliverables are on-spec, on-budget, and on-schedule.
- Equipment Specification — Develop detailed procurement specifications for major components (main transformers, switchgear, diesel generators, UPS systems) and collaborate with suppliers.
- Regulatory Compliance — Navigate regulatory requirements (CA-CNSC and US-NRC), support licensing processes, and ensure all designs meet nuclear-specific standards.
- Grid Integration — Interface with transmission providers to manage Generator Interconnection Agreements and ensure grid stability compliance.
- Codes & Standards — Apply codes and standards for electrical systems design in the US, Canada, and EU (e.g., IEEE, IEC, CSA, NEC).
Required Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (Master’s preferred)
- Licensure: Professional Engineering License — US (PE), Canada (PEng), or equivalent international
- Experience: 8+ years in heavy/high-reliability industries (nuclear, power, process, marine, oil & gas, military, etc.)
- Software: Strong PC and productivity software skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Project, Visio)
Desired Characteristics
- Master’s degree in Electrical, Mechanical, Nuclear, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, or equivalent
- Ability to independently design/draft finished products using AutoCAD or MicroStation
- Experience with modern digital engineering collaboration and design tools, such as:
- Hexagon Smart Electrical (SPEL)
- Content creation (Confluence/Atlassian)
- Requirements management (DOORS-NextGen/IBM, MS Team Center)
- Diagram/drawing (Visio, AutoCAD)
- Design & analysis simulation (Easy5, Simulink/MATLAB, Mathcad, 3KeyMaster, ETAP, SKM)
- Change/configuration/document/BOM management (ENOVIA/Dassault Systèmes)
- Strong Protection and Control experience
- Experience with Grid Interface
- Experience with Generator and Large Power Transformer Protection
- Programming and setting GE-Multilin and SEL Relays
