About the role
AI Engineer & Trainer - Contract (Financial Services) - Remote
Contract: 4-6 months, potential to extend/convert Basis: Day Rate (Outside IR35) Sector: Financial Services (regulated environment)
The role
A large, regulated financial services organisation is looking for a hands-on AI Engineer & Trainer to sit within its AI Adoption team. You'll be the technical point of contact for staff at every level of AI fluency - from business users needing practical, low-jargon help through to programmers needing real engineering support.
This isn't a generic "AI trainer" role. You'll be debugging SQL/formula logic built with Claude, configuring Custom GPTs, structuring new use cases from scratch, and increasingly building agentic workflows as governance allows. You'll also stand up a usage/cost (FinOps-style) measurement tool from scratch, and build the baseline reporting that feeds tool onboarding, offboarding and renegotiation decisions.
What you'll be doing
First port of call for AI helpdesk queries - unblocking both everyday users and technical/programmer users
Designing, building and testing new use cases directly with business champions
Standing up and owning a usage/cost measurement tool for AI adoption across the org
Maintaining a working log of use cases feeding a best-practice repository
Turning recurring problems into reusable skills, templates and processes
Coordinating closely with the AI Projects team, IT Ops, and AI Governance to avoid duplication and flag where bottom-up use cases point to bigger centrally-owned opportunities
Advising an internal AI forum on new ChatGPT/Claude features based on real usage patterns
What you'll need
Strong, current hands-on experience with OpenAI and Anthropic tools, and a clear view on how to build solutions with them (not just use them)
Working knowledge of Excel, SQL and Databricks - comfortable learning fast where gaps exist
Experience supporting or training mixed-skill audiences: patient with beginners, credible with engineers
Practical familiarity with AI usage/cost tracking tools, or confidence picking one up quickly
Comfortable working in a regulated environment with awareness of data handling and compliance basics
Approachable, patient, solutions-focused - genuinely enjoys unblocking people's problems
