JOB ADVERTISEMENT: WELL BEING ADVISER

Position Title: Well being Adviser

Reports To: Student Well being and Inclusion Manager

Grade: NG6

Location: Harrow / West End Sites (Flexibility to work across all University sites required)


Job Purpose

Situated within the Student Support and Residential Life service cluster, the Well being Adviser plays a key role in providing specialist well being-related advice and support to students, collaborating closely with internal and external partners.

Key aspects of the role include:

  • Proactive & Early Intervention: Developing tailored support for students facing significant personal barriers to study.

  • Safeguarding & Crisis Support: Safeguarding vulnerable students through direct intervention, signposting, or referrals.

  • Health Promotion & Training: Designing and delivering innovative health promotion activities and training staff and students on student support and safeguarding.


Main Responsibilities & Accountability's
1. Student Casework
  • Receive and manage referrals for students needing specific support interventions, including assessing, planning, and reviewing individual ongoing requirements.

  • Provide initial advice and case contact for students experiencing trauma or who are victims of crime (including hate crime and gender-based violence). Flexibility with working hours may be required for urgent situations.

  • Identify and escalate safeguarding risks for vulnerable students.

  • Work closely with the Head of Student Support & Residential Life on fitness-to-study matters, case conferences, and follow-up support.


2. Partnership Working
  • Liaise with key internal stakeholders (Senior Tutors, Disability Tutors, Course Leaders) to plan, coordinate, and monitor individual care and progression plans.

  • Manage relationships with local health providers (GPs, sexual health services, drug/alcohol services) to ensure easy access for students on-site.


3. Service Design & Development
  • Lead the development of accessible support services for disadvantaged or underrepresented student cohorts (e.g., care-experienced and estranged students).

  • Design, deliver, and evaluate student health promotion programs tailored to the student life cycle, in collaboration with the Student's Union.

  • Contribute to training workshops for students and staff to support a whole-university approach to well being.

  • Stay updated on HE sector best practices, research, and innovative support approaches through external networking.

  • Participate in regular policy and procedure reviews to ensure evidence-based, compliant practices.

  • Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade as required.


Context & Dimensions
  • Directorate Context: Part of a small team within Student and Academic Services (SAS), providing support across West End and Harrow campuses.

  • Autonomy & Impact: Requires a high degree of autonomy, workload management, and stakeholder engagement. No direct line management or budgetary responsibilities.

  • Health & Safety: Maintain an active understanding of individual health and safety responsibilities and workplace risk awareness.


Person SpecificationCategoryEssentialDesirableQualifications* Degree-level education OR equivalent experience in welfare/support within HE, health, or social care.

* Professional qualifications (e.g., Social Worker, Occupational Therapist).


* Professional body accreditation/registration.


* Specialised training (e.g., Sexual Violence Liaison, Mental Health First Aid Instructor, Advocacy).

Experience & Knowledge

* Assessment of support needs and risk management, including statutory referrals.


* Experience working in FE/HE or community social care with high-need individuals.


* Effective casework management, record-keeping, and crisis response.


* Understanding of legal, equal opportunity, and safeguarding issues in HE.


* Experience delivering well being/mental health training.


* Strong internal and external networking capabilities.

* Experience working with young adults and marginalised groups.


* Detailed understanding of barriers impacting learning.

Skills & Abilities

* Competence in managing client crises and making appropriate referrals.


* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with vulnerable individuals.


* Clear understanding of confidentiality and professional boundaries.


* Emotional resilience and ability to work calmly under pressure.


* Strong collaborative, organisational, and time-management skills.


* Proficient in digital tools (Microsoft 365, social media, web developments).
