Head of Design

Our client is a human-data company working at the coalface of frontier AI, recruiting domain experts and building the workflows that let them generate the data the world’s leading AI labs actually need to get better. They’re not building models. They’re building the human judgement that trains them.

We’re looking for the first Head of Design in their new leadership structure: someone who can define what “great” looks like for AI-generated presentations and communication design, and build a team around that standard from scratch.

The Role
You’ll own quality and craft for the slides & presentations domain, sitting inside one of their core accounts; the first of five design groupings the company is building leadership around over the next 3–6 months. What you set up here becomes the template for everything that follows.

Two types of work run through your domain:

1. Evaluation – experts assess and critique AI-generated presentations, producing the preference data that teaches models what good looks like.
2. Production – experts build original decks and assets from briefs, producing the gold-standard examples models train on directly.

Your job is to make sure both are excellent, consistently, at scale – and to build the team that can hold that line.

Day-to-day:

– Defining the bar by writing the standards, rubrics, and reference examples that separate genuinely great presentation design from merely competent AI output
– Coaching craft by training a distributed network of experts on prompting technique and AI-collaboration best practices, so the whole pool gets sharper, not just your top performers
– Managing the people who manage quality with direct line management of pod leads, plus oversight of QA reviewers to keep scoring consistent across the board
– Making your leadership’s life easier by turning messy, ambiguous questions about scope, quality, or process into clear answers

The Person
We want to speak to people with a genuine eye for design (presentation and comms design). You can look at a deck and say exactly why it works, in a way experts will trust, and you rely on your coaching instinct; you’d rather make ten designers better than be the best designer in the room.

Experience leading a design team or studio, including responsibility for consistency across other people’s work, not just your own. You’re comfortable and confident building structure in ambiguity; this function doesn’t fully exist yet, and you’ll be the one shaping it. You’ll have a real curiosity about AI-generated design: you don’t need a technical background, but you should already have strong opinions about what makes AI output good or bad.

Bonus points for:

– Experience in a human-data, RLHF, or expert-network environment
– Hands-on familiarity with AI presentation tools like Gamma, Tome, or Beautiful.ai
– NYC- or San Francisco-based preferred, but not a must; US working hours a definite need
