About the role

Join our dynamic team as a Senior Mechanical Engineer, where you'll lead and develop our in-house Domestic Gas Engineers, ensuring top-tier delivery of safety checks, repairs, installations, and emergency services. Reporting to the Gas Operations Manager, you'll drive quality, compliance, and performance—both in-house and across contractor services—while upholding the Council’s legal obligations under Gas Safety regulations.

Be the force behind safe, efficient, and high-impact gas services across our community. Lead and manage the in-house gas operatives team to deliver safe, efficient, and cost-effective gas services, including landlord safety checks and repairs.

Other duties include:
    • Oversee out-of-hours emergency gas services using internal staff, agency workers, and contractors.
    • Support contractor management to ensure compliance with legislation, technical standards, and Council policies.

    • Develop and deliver training (e.g., toolbox talks, manufacturer-led sessions) to maintain staff competence and resident safety.

    • Contribute to the creation and revision of gas safety policies and procedures in line with legal and regulatory standards.

    • Conduct health and safety inspections, risk assessments (including COSHH), and implement corrective actions.

    • Mentor gas apprentices to support their progression into qualified engineers.

    • Monitor service performance through feedback and complaints to drive continuous improvement.

    • Manage staff leave and resource planning to maintain safe and effective service delivery.

    • Promote safeguarding of vulnerable individuals encountered during service delivery.

    • Verify staff certifications and competencies, escalating concerns as needed.

    • Supervise voids gas operatives to ensure smooth and safe property turnaround.

    • Ensure provision and maintenance of PPE, tools, and equipment for all operatives.

    • Deliver health and safety inductions, training, and toolbox talks to maintain safe working environments.

    • Investigate and report accidents and incidents, liaising with health and safety advisors.

    • Oversee vehicle checks and ensure transport logs are completed and submitted.

    • Assist in contractor procurement and develop technical specifications for gas services.

    • Stay current with gas safety legislation and best practices through CPD and industry networking.

    • Attend meetings and events as required, including outside normal working hours.

    • Respond to general enquiries and health and safety complaints professionally.

    • Participate in the out-of-hours technical support rota, offering guidance to field operatives.

    • Act as deputy for the Gas Operations Manager on gas safety matters when needed.
