Role Overview

The E1 – Engineer in Training will provide supervised engineering support to the Transmission Sustainment Planning Specialist Engineer in meeting key deliverables associated with FAC-008 Facility Ratings and FERC Order 881. The successful candidate will perform engineering calculations, data review, technical documentation, facility rating updates, and asset data quality activities using established procedures, standards, drawings, and engineering specifications.

This is an entry-level engineering position that works under the close supervision of senior professional engineers. The Engineer will support BC Hydro’s transmission planning and sustainment activities while ensuring work is completed safely, accurately, on schedule, and in accordance with applicable engineering standards and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support project-related facility rating requests by reviewing available engineering documentation, identifying missing information, requesting additional documentation, and assisting with the development of facility ratings for project teams.
  • Assist with the annual review of transmission facility ratings, including coordinating with external entities to obtain current ratings for jointly owned transmission lines and updating records accordingly.
  • Review existing facility ratings for BC Hydro-owned transmission facilities and assist with identifying and implementing required updates.
  • Update facility rating information as new engineering reports, studies, and technical data become available through the FAC-008 sustainment program.
  • Support Transmission System Operations (TDSO) and Transmission Planning by providing information and technical documentation related to existing facility ratings.
  • Assist with preparation of FAC-008 Reliability Standard Audit Worksheets (RSAWs), audit documentation, and supporting technical information.
  • Assist with responding to data and documentation requests during regulatory and compliance audits.
  • Support updates to engineering standards, procedures, methodologies, and technical documentation related to transmission facility ratings.
  • Assist with asset data quality activities, including data entry, validation, review, correction, and maintenance.
  • Perform engineering calculations and technical checks using established procedures, codes, standards, drawings, and specifications.
  • Assist with preparing simple plans, designs, technical reports, calculations, bills of material, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Review technical information and identify discrepancies, data gaps, or inconsistencies for further investigation by senior engineering staff.
  • Assist with routine technical surveys and engineering investigations under the direction of a senior professional engineer.
  • Make routine technical decisions using clearly defined procedures, documented precedents, and BC Hydro engineering standards.
  • Maintain accurate engineering records and supporting documentation.
  • Provide general engineering and technical support to the Transmission Sustainment Planning team.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • University degree in Engineering or Applied Science.
  • Entry-level to 1 year of relevant engineering experience or equivalent.
  • Registered as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Geoscientist-in-Training (GIT) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), another Canadian jurisdiction, or eligible for registration with EGBC.
  • Familiarity with electrical utility, transmission planning, power systems, asset management, or engineering data is an asset.
  • Familiarity with FAC-008, FERC Order 881, NERC reliability standards, and transmission facility ratings is an asset.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations and technical analysis using established procedures and standards.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, reports, and technical documentation.
  • Familiarity with CAD systems and engineering drawing standards.
  • Ability to use standard industry design and analysis software.
  • Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Intermediate English skills in a professional environment, both written and spoken.

Professional Practice Requirements

  • EGBC registrants provided to BC Hydro through this assignment will work under BC Hydro’s Professional Practice Management Plan, Quality Management Pillar.
  • The registrant must apply their own or their firm’s Permit to Practice number to work that is sealed by the registrant.
  • All project documentation produced by the registrant during the contract will be retained and preserved by BC Hydro in accordance with EGBC Bylaws.
