Location: Sheffield S3

Salary: £25,000 – £34,000 FTE (Pro. Rata £21,000 – 26,000) (Depending on experience and/or qualifications)

37.5 Hours per week. 39 weeks Contract.  This is a permanent position

About the role

A Sheffield based Alternative provision are seeking a Functional Skills Tutor, you will play a key role in supporting the learning, personal development and future aspirations of children and young people who are unable to access mainstream education on a full-time basis.

You will recognise that students within our Alternative Education Provision often learn most effectively through practical, engaging activities. Classroom-based learning will therefore be designed to complement and reinforce the skills and experiences students develop through their placement.

This role would be well suited to an experienced HLTA or tutor who is qualified and confident in delivering Functional Skills Maths and/or English up to Level 2. The successful candidate will also have the flexibility and creativity to deliver a range of careers, PSHE/PSHCE and personal development learning, tailored to the individual needs, interests and abilities of the cohort.

Key Responsibilities

Salary is dependent on experience, qualifications and training. All successful applicants will:

  • Demonstrate a strong understanding of relevant statutory requirements, legislation and regulatory frameworks.
  • Understand the challenges and barriers faced by young people within youth, alternative provision and educational settings.
  • Have a sound understanding of teaching and learning practices, curriculum development and assessment processes.
  • Possess the ability and experience to teach across Key Stages 3 and 4.
  • Have knowledge of Functional Skills qualifications, including their delivery and assessment requirements.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of effective strategies that promote learning, development and positive progression.
  • Communicate confidently and effectively with a wide range of school staff, students, parents and other stakeholders.
  • Work effectively as part of a collaborative team, supporting colleagues and contributing to the overall effectiveness of the provision.
  • Have at least three years’ experience working within Alternative Provision, youth services, the criminal justice system, youth provision or in a school-based teaching support role.
