About the role


Our client, a leader in the Defence & Security and Manufacturing sectors, is seeking a Principal Optical Test Technician to join their dynamic team. This permanent role is focused on supporting and developing manufacturing capabilities through detailed verification and validation processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Set up, align, and calibrate optical test equipment, ensuring accurate configuration and optimisation.
  • Lead acceptance testing to ensure products meet defined optical specifications and quality standards.
  • Implement process control techniques to maintain production consistency and perform statistical analysis for performance metrics.
  • Work collaboratively with Optical SMEs to collate, summarise and record evidence.
  • Produce comprehensive reports with actionable insights to refine and improve designs and processes.
  • Oversee the transfer of test techniques and methods from R&D to mass production, ensuring scalability and repeatability.
  • Investigate test discrepancies, implement corrective actions, and collaborate with cross-functional teams for performance enhancement.
  • Create and maintain detailed technical documentation, including test plans, procedures, and data analysis reports.
  • Optimise value streams and create manufacturing workflows using Lean6Sigma, TIM WOODS, and Lean methodology.
  • Specify and implement digital production tools and capital equipment to maximise productivity and efficiency.

Job Requirements:

  • Significant experience in optical testing and a solid understanding of product manufacturing or assembly principles.
  • Detailed understanding of risk assessments and quality standards.
  • Excellent communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience in resolving complex issues.
  • Proficiency in statistical data analysis and MS Office and ERP software.
  • Knowledge of Lean and 6-sigma manufacturing principles is beneficial.
  • Experience in the following areas is essential: fibre Laser and bulk-optic assembly testing, bulk optics handling and cleaning, using test equipment like Thermal Power meters, OSA, Scope, NI-DAQ, and PSU, alignment and adjustment of optical assemblies, and working in cleanroom environments.
  • Understanding of product lifecycles and revision control, and experience in optical modelling and test methods.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Industrial Engineering, Operations Management, or a related field.
  • Advanced degrees or professional certifications in Optical Engineering, Physics, or similar are highly desirable.
  • Or equivalent level and depth of experience and training.
