As the authority for the Royal Navy’s nuclear submarine capability, the Submarine Directorate oversees one of the most complex and critical elements of UK defence. Covering everything from in‑service management to long‑term fleet modernisation, the directorate ensures the Submarine Flotilla remains safe, reliable, and ready to meet national security requirements.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Are you an analytical professional who wants to use evidence, data and insight to support the operational effectiveness of the Royal Navy’s submarine capability?

As an SSN Analyst, a key role in delivering rigorous operational analysis, drawing together data, lessons and trends from across the underwater warfare community to inform assurance, doctrine, risk identification and continuous improvement. Working as part of a multi-disciplinary team, you will collaborate with military operators, analysts and Defence stakeholders to produce robust, timely and actionable insights that support senior decision-making and contribute directly to operational advantage.

What you will do:

  • Deliver scientifically rigorous and evidence-based operational analysis to generate insights, lessons learned, and recommendations to improve SSN operational effectiveness.
  • Develop frameworks for automation and exploitation of datasets to support in-service and operational stakeholders.
  • Liaise with stakeholders across different business areas, and wider Defence to support data acquisition, analysis, and dissemination of findings.
  • Support operational assurance activities, including preparation of briefings, studies, and responses to senior tasking

Person specification

To be successful with your application, you'll need to show that you meet the following criteria:

  • Programming experience (preferably open-source tools)
  • Application of analytical techniques to support decision-making
  • Strong data handling, analysis, and visualisation skills
  • Experience producing evidence-based insights for stakeholders

The below criteria are desirable only. These will not be assessed throughout the recruitment process, but will be used in the event of tied scores between candidates

  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in a scientific, mathematical, or engineering discipline
  • Experience of submarine, maritime, or defence operations
  • Knowledge of MOD structures and processes
  • Experience working with classified or sensitive data
  • Experience supporting operational or performance analysis programmes

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance. The post does not offer relocation expenses. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
