About the role

Location: Orpington, Sevenoaks, Gravesend or Biggin Hill
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Working Pattern: Office Based

About the Role

We are recruiting for an experienced Family & Matrimonial Secretary to join a well-established and highly regarded multi-office law firm with locations across Kent and South East London.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Legal Secretary who wants to develop their career beyond a traditional support role. The firm offers a genuine progression pathway towards becoming a Family & Matrimonial Case Manager, supported by structured training, mentoring and increasing responsibility.

You’ll join a friendly and supportive Family team, providing high-quality secretarial and administrative support while developing your technical knowledge and gaining greater exposure to a varied caseload covering divorce, matrimonial finances and children matters.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive secretarial and administrative support to Family & Matrimonial Solicitors.
  • Prepare and manage correspondence, legal documentation and case files with a high level of accuracy.
  • Assist with matters relating to divorce, financial proceedings and children cases.
  • Prepare court forms and other legal documentation.
  • Assist with the collation and organisation of evidence and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain and update client files, ensuring all information is complete, accurate and up to date.
  • Schedule client appointments, meetings and court dates.
  • Handle client enquiries in a professional, sensitive and compassionate manner.
  • Liaise with courts, Solicitors, barristers and other professionals as required.
  • Assist with billing and invoicing, ensuring accuracy and timely processing.
  • Use the firm’s case management and other IT systems to maintain accurate records.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with sensitive client information.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across the firm’s offices.
  • Develop your Family Law knowledge and responsibilities as you progress towards a Case Manager position.

About You

To be considered for this position, you will ideally have:

  • Previous experience as a Legal Secretary, ideally within a Family or Matrimonial department.
  • A good working knowledge of legal terminology, documentation and court procedures.
  • Excellent typing and IT skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office and legal software.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • A strong focus on client care.
  • The ability to communicate sensitively and professionally with clients who may be experiencing difficult or emotional circumstances.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • A high level of discretion when dealing with confidential information.
  • A proactive and flexible approach to work.
  • The ability to remain organised and effective when working under pressure.

Previous experience within a Lexcel-accredited or similarly accredited law firm would be advantageous but is not essential.

Career Progression

One of the key attractions of this opportunity is the firm’s commitment to developing the successful candidate beyond a traditional secretarial position.

You’ll receive a structured induction into the firm’s systems and workflows, followed by ongoing training and mentoring. As your technical knowledge and confidence develop, you’ll be given increasing autonomy and involvement in Family & Matrimonial matters, with the opportunity to progress into Case Manager responsibilities.

For an experienced Legal Secretary looking to develop their career within Family Law, this is an excellent opportunity to gain greater responsibility while benefiting from the support of an established team.

Why Apply?

Benefits include:

  • Competitive salary, reviewed annually.
  • Clear salary banding aligned with experience.
  • Genuine progression to Case Manager responsibilities.
  • Structured induction, training and mentoring.
  • Increasing autonomy as your experience develops.
  • Direct client contact and exposure to a varied Family & Matrimonial caseload.
  • Good holiday allowance.
  • Private Medical Insurance.
  • Life Assurance.
  • Workplace pension scheme.
  • Assistance with childcare costs.
  • Opportunity to benefit from the Company Car Policy after one year’s service.
  • Discounted legal services for you and your family.
  • Regular social events and cross-office knowledge sharing.
  • Modern, air-conditioned offices.
  • Supportive and collaborative working environment.

The Firm

You’ll be joining a close-knit firm with low staff turnover and a strong reputation for delivering high-quality legal services exclusively to private-paying clients.

The firm is committed to developing its people and offers a supportive environment where employees can increase their knowledge, take on greater responsibility and build a long-term career.

The position can be based at Orpington, Sevenoaks, Gravesend or Biggin Hill, with collaboration across the firm’s offices.
