About the role
Client: Cardiff Council
Location: County Hall, Atlantic Wharf, Cardiff, Glamorgan, CF104UW, United Kingdom
PAYE Pay Rate: £37.26 per hour
Work Pattern: Hybrid – 2 days in the office – 37 hours a week
Main Purpose of the Role
To lead and manage an Intake & Assessment Social Work Team, providing effective supervision, professional oversight and support to Social Workers carrying out statutory assessments and safeguarding interventions for children and young people aged 0–18.
The role focuses on ensuring children’s safety and wellbeing, managing risk, supporting effective decision-making and ensuring timely, high-quality assessments and interventions.
Typical Day Overview
- Lead and support a team of Social Workers.
- Provide supervision, guidance and professional oversight.
- Review referrals received from the Multi Agency Safeguarding Hub (MASH).
- Oversee statutory assessments and safeguarding interventions.
- Support Social Workers with Section 47 Child Protection enquiries.
- Monitor risk and ensure appropriate safeguarding decisions are made.
- Oversee well-being assessments and interventions.
- Provide support with pre-proceedings and court work where required.
- Manage competing priorities within a busy duty service.
- Work with children, families and professional partners.
- Identify strengths and family support networks to help children remain safely within their families.
- Ensure appropriate transfer to Locality Teams when longer-term support is required.
Key Skills & Responsibilities
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Experience supervising and developing Social Workers.
- Strong understanding of children’s safeguarding and statutory responsibilities.
- Knowledge of child protection procedures and Section 47 enquiries.
- Understanding of court and pre-proceedings processes.
- Strong risk assessment and decision-making skills.
- Ability to manage a busy and fast-paced service.
- Ability to remain calm, objective and child-focused in complex situations.
- Ability to provide professional challenge, guidance and support.
- Strong communication and partnership-working skills.
- Ability to promote strengths-based and family-focused practice.
- Ensure assessments and interventions are timely and meet required standards.
Essential Qualifications / Requirements
- Registered with Social Care Wales.
- Substantial experience in children’s safeguarding services.
- Experience supervising and developing Social Workers.
- Management experience or readiness to step into a management role.
- Sound knowledge of statutory safeguarding responsibilities and court processes.
