Job summary

HMS Temeraire(TEM) is the home of People Support and the Royal Navy School of Physical Training. Operational success rests firmly upon the quality of our people. People are our ultimate capability, and the role of the Lifeguard is to support the executive department with the running of the swimming pool for all service personnel, civilian user groups who are licenced to use the facilities and establishment pass holders. Civil Servants and Armed Forces personnel work together in a wealth of interesting and challenging jobs in different disciplines, ranging from sport delivery, sport development, family support, casualty management, and adventurous training.

The Lifeguard is a member of the HMS Temeraire executive department. The primary purpose of the role is to conduct the task of providing health and safety support to all users of the swimming pool iaw policy and protocols laid out by the Royal Lifesaving Society. They will work primarily under the guidance of the Swimming Pool Manager and a very small executive team whose key role is the safe and efficient running of a military establishment. The lifeguard is a member of a very small team of 3 whose main responsibilities are the safe management of the swimming pool, the cleanliness of the pool and the reporting of defects to their chain of command.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

• Carry out day to day duties as a lifeguard. This will include observing and supervising all swimming activities in a busy military swimming pool open 7 days a week with the primary focus being the safety of all pool users. Set up and derig the pool in readiness for programmed swims iaw swimming pool timetable.
• Responsible to the Swimming Pool Manager for enforcing the rules laid down in the Pool Safety Operating Procedures and adhering to the rules and recommendations laid out in the Health and Safety in Swimming Pools document.
• Carry out daily, weekly and monthly cleaning of the pool, surrounding area, equipment and stores. Use cleaning equipment, pool vacuum and pool chemicals iaw H&S policy. Maintain cleanliness of the establishment chemical store adhering to H&S policy.
• Report pool defects to the Swimming Pool Manager and Establishment CPOPT and emergency defects to the Duty Plant Room Engineer. Liaise with pool engineers to ensure the pool water, heating and surrounding facilities are routinely maintained to optimum efficiency.
• Attend monthly lifeguard training iaw RLSS UK recommendations and establishment policy, to include update training and development as directed by the RLSS.

Person specification

The successful candidate should possess drive, strong inter-personal and communication skills, the ability to build positive and productive relationships with both service and civilian personnel and be willing to embrace change and a culture of continuous improvement. Teamwork, flexibility and excellent communication skills are essential with the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships. A team player who can work alongside the establishment executive and a small team of civil servants to provide a first-class service for all establishment users.
