About the role
Job summary
The Ministry of Defence, Civil Service workforce is diverse, with many different functions and professions ranging from police officers, security guards, trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff to support the British Army.
The Infantry Training Centre (ITC) is in Catterick Garrison where it delivers Infantry basic training and initial trade training. The ITC consists of three units; 1st and 2nd Infantry Training Battalions and a Headquarter Battalion all collocated along with Soldier Academy HQ. The 1st and 2nd Battalions deliver the Combat Infantry Course (CIC) for all recruits, who wish to join the Infantry, Royal Armoured Corp and Household Cavalry both regular and reserve. The ITC also commands Pegasus Company (which delivers P Coy), the Army School of Ceremonial, and the Army School of Bagpipe Music and Highland Drumming (based in Edinburgh).
We deliver training which covers everything from teaching soldiers to play the Bagpipes to developing a civilian with no previous military experience into a trained, confident Infantry soldier. Whilst the training delivery is undertaken by highly skilled and experienced members of the Army, we are supported by almost 200 Ministry of Defence (MOD) Civil Servants along with several Defence contractors. We have roles ranging from drivers to HR Clerks and storekeepers to tutors!

Job description
Under the direction of the ITC Support Battalion Learning and Development Wing Head of Learning Development & Basic Skills Development Manager (BSDM), the Learning Development Tutor has a full-time commitment dedicated to the delivery of key intervention support to Basic Training trainees across The Infantry Training Centre.
Main Role Responsibilities:
- Deputising for the Head of Learning Development & BSDM during periods of absence.
- Conduct initial assessments for functional skills or administrating examinations as required.
- Design and implement targeted interventions for learners with Specific Learning Differences (SpLD).
- Delivering targeted small group interventions for recruits within rehabilitative holdover platoons to ensure they remain engaged and continue developing their skills during their recovery period.
- Providing Specialist English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Support for recruits whose first language is not English to remove communication barriers to training.
- Delivering small group workshops for trainees with Specific Learning Differences (SpLD) to develop practical strategies and enhance their learning capabilities.
- Conducting interviews with recruits facing learning barriers and perform initial screenings to identify specific needs and determine the appropriate support pathway.
- Leading one-to-one and small-group sessions for recruits requiring focused support with reading, writing, or comprehension skills.
- Administering dyslexia screening tools and delivering staff or zero week induction briefs in the Head of Learning Development & BSDM’s absence.
- Updating and maintaining individual learning plans (ILPs) to ensure that all recruits’ progress and interventions are accurately documented, including providing handover takeover of Individual Learning Plans (ILP) from Basic Training to Initial Trade Training.
- Carry out duties commensurate with the appointment and MOD CS grade required by Line Manager.
Person specification
Essential Skills & Experience Required:- Experience of delivering English and or Mathematics to learners aged 16+ (KS4 equivalent and above)
- Demonstrate evidence of Teachers Standards Teachers' standards: overview through:
- Secure professional knowledge and understanding of teaching and learning (Teacher Standard 3).
- Effective use of teaching, learning and assessment strategies (Teacher Standard 6).
- Promoting positive learner progress and outcomes (Teacher Standard 2).
- Maintaining high professional and ethical standards (Teacher Standards 3 and 8).
- Building positive and effective relationships with learners and colleagues through clear communication (Teacher Standards 1 and 8).
- Sound interpersonal and management skills with experience of liaising with internal and external staff at all levels.
- Competent user of Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
- Teaching qualification at Level 4 or above.
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Evidence of experience of delivering English and or Maths in an adult context.
- Knowledge and experience of Data Protection and Information Management principles.
- Experience of using digital learning technologies and ICT to enhance teaching, learning and assessment, particularly within an adult learning environment.
- Experience of writing performance reviews, learner reports, appraisals or other formal documentation.
- Experience of supporting learners with Specific Learning Differences (SpLD), including dyslexia.
- Experience of delivering English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) support to adult learners.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills (QTLS)
- Specialist teaching qualification in Adult Literacy, Numeracy or ESOL.
- Specialist teaching qualification in Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
- A specialist qualification in supporting individuals with dyslexia / or relevant experience
- Data Protection and Data Management.
- Diversity and Inclusion trained.
- Safe-Guarding and Prevent trained.
