Director of Finance & Business Services – The Opportunity

Location: UK – remote-first
Contract: Permanent
Salary: £95,000–£110,000 depending on experience

MI Select is partnering with an established and growing purpose-led organisation to appoint an experienced Director of Finance.

The organisation manages a significant portfolio of charitable and grant-funded activity and is entering an important phase of growth. The successful individual will take senior ownership of the UK finance function while also providing financial leadership to a portfolio of programmes and senior stakeholders.

This is a broad role requiring an unusual combination of strong technical charity accounting knowledge, operational finance leadership and relationship-management capability.

The role

You will have responsibility for the quality, integrity and delivery of financial reporting across the UK organisation and its programme portfolio.

Responsibilities will include:

• Taking ownership of month-end and year-end financial close
• Maintaining strong balance sheet, ledger and control-account integrity
• Leading preparation and review of statutory accounts
• Acting as the key finance contact throughout the external audit process
• Providing technical guidance on UK charity accounting, FRS 102 and Charities SORP
• Ensuring appropriate accounting and reporting for restricted and unrestricted funding
• Producing and reviewing management accounts, budgets, forecasts and cashflow reporting
• Providing financial oversight of grants, contracts and funded programmes
• Advising senior stakeholders on accounting treatment, financial risks and funding arrangements
• Maintaining robust financial controls and governance
• Leading, coaching and developing finance team members
• Working closely with programme and project leaders to provide clear and responsive financial support
• Supporting multi-currency and internationally connected financial activity
• Developing systems, processes and reporting capability as the organisation continues to scale

Candidate profile

We are looking for a technically strong and commercially minded charity finance director who is comfortable taking full ownership rather than operating solely in an advisory capacity.

You should be:

• A fully qualified accountant – ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA or equivalent
• An experienced senior finance professional with significant post-qualification experience
• Highly knowledgeable in UK charity accounting, FRS 102 and Charities SORP
• Experienced in preparing or reviewing statutory accounts and managing external audit
• Familiar with restricted funds, grant accounting and funder reporting
• Experienced in budgeting, forecasting, cash management and financial controls
• Comfortable managing substantial and complex financial activity
• Experienced in leading and developing finance professionals
• Confident working with senior non-finance stakeholders and explaining complex financial matters clearly
• Strong in Excel and comfortable working across modern accounting and ERP systems

Experience gained within a large or complex charity, charitable foundation, grantmaking organisation, international NGO or professional-services environment supporting charity clients would be particularly relevant.

The opportunity

This role offers the opportunity for an experienced Charity Finance Director to take genuine ownership of a growing UK finance operation while working closely with senior stakeholders responsible for substantial mission-led programmes.

It would particularly suit someone who combines the technical discipline of a strong Financial Controller with the communication skills and judgement of an experienced Finance Director.
