About the role
Client: West Northamptonshire Council
Location: Hybrid – Westbridge Office, Northampton NN5 5JW (up to 3 days on site)
Salary: £18.86 per hour
Hours: 37.5 hours per week (30 hours considered over 4 days)
Main Purpose of the Role
As the Board and Governance Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the effective administration of the organization’s governance framework. You will coordinate Board and Committee activities, support statutory and regulatory compliance, maintain governance records, and provide professional governance support to senior leaders and Board Members. Your work will help ensure meetings are well managed, decisions are accurately recorded, and governance obligations are met efficiently and effectively.
What a Typical Day Might Look Like
- Coordinate upcoming Board and Committee meetings, preparing agendas, reports and meeting packs.
- Liaise with Board Members, Executive Directors and senior managers to gather reports and ensure deadlines are met.
- Attend Board or Committee meetings, take accurate minutes, record decisions and monitor actions through to completion.
- Maintain governance registers, declarations of interest and Board membership records.
- Update governance calendars and meeting schedules.
- Support statutory requirements, including Companies House filings and governance documentation.
- Coordinate Board recruitment, induction and development activities.
- Respond to governance enquiries from Board Members and senior stakeholders.
- Assist with governance audits, compliance reviews and continuous improvement projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Organise and coordinate Board and Committee meetings from planning through to completion.
- Prepare agendas, reports, meeting packs and governance documentation.
- Attend meetings, produce accurate minutes and maintain action logs.
- Manage governance calendars and annual meeting schedules.
- Act as the primary point of contact for Board Member and governance-related enquiries.
- Maintain governance records, registers and declarations of interest.
- Support statutory filings and ensure Companies House records remain accurate.
- Coordinate Annual General Meetings (AGMs) and Extraordinary General Meetings (EGMs).
- Administer Board recruitment, onboarding and induction processes.
- Coordinate Board appraisal and development programmes.
- Support governance audits, compliance activities and regulatory reporting.
- Maintain confidential governance records securely and accurately.
- Contribute to governance improvement initiatives and best practice.
Essential Qualifications
- Experience in a governance, Board or Committee support role.
OR
- A governance qualification (CGI/ICSA) or equivalent experience.
Please note: The role requires attendance at some Wednesday evening Board meetings (approximately 6:00pm–8:30pm), with a mix of on-site and Microsoft Teams meetings.
