This is an opportunity for existing staff to become a member of the Government Statistical Group (GSG), a part of the Government Statistician Service (GSS) at their substantive grade.

This advert enables individuals to take the online GSS test, a requirement for the badging assessment.

This exercise is only open to applicants who are a substantive EO - G6 within one of the government departments listed below.
All other applications will be rejected.

• Department for Culture Media and Sport - DCMS (All grades)
• Department for Transport - DFT (All grades)
• Ministry of Defence - MOD (All Grades)
• NHS Business Services Authority - NHSBSA (HEO, SEO, G7)
• Office for National Statistics - ONS (SEO and HEO)
• Office of Rail and Road - ORR (SEO)
• Welsh Government - WG (All Grades)
• UK Health Security Agency - UKHSA (G7, SEO and HEO)

Please note that this is not a promotion. Successful candidates will be badged into the GSG and will remain in their existing post/department.

What to Expect:

You will join the Government Statistician Group (GSG) within the GSS. The GSG is the professional community for all civil servants working in the collection, production and communication of official statistics. The community is spread across most UK government departments and the devolved administrations in Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales.

Qualifications

You should have one of the following:
• A first or second class honours degree (2:2 minimum for Statistical Officer) or equivalent in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Psychology, Geography, Data Science or similar); or

• A higher degree, e.g. an MSc or PhD, in a subject containing formal statistical training (e.g. Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Sciences, Business Studies, Data Science, Psychology, Geography or similar).

• Have worked in a statistical or data science field for a minimum of three years and are able to demonstrate Continuous Professional Development (via a logbook) in applying statistics or data science at the same level as a foundation degree or Higher National Diploma (level five), which demonstrates the expected skills as outlined in the GSG Competency framework.

• If you have completed a Level 4 Data Analyst apprenticeship, you may be considered for Executive Officer (EO) roles with evidence of two years’ continuous professional development in a government statistical or data analysis role. Continuous professional development must be documented in a logbook

Online Test
Once you have submitted your application you will be invited via email to complete the GSS online multiple choice test. This is a timed test and must be completed and submitted by midday on the closing date to be considered for the next stage of the process. You are encouraged to try the test attached to the advert before attempting the real test.

Dissemination Test and Interview
Those that pass the multiple choice test will be invited by their home department to attend an assessment.
This consists of a Dissemination test/presentation and a competency based interview.

Candidates will be assessed against the three statistical competencies as part of the interview only. The 2021 GSG Competency Framework will provide the basis for assessment at the relevant grade.
