OR109791 – HGV Driver Team Leader

Main Purpose of the Role

To safely and efficiently deliver high-quality recycling and waste collection services for Monmouthshire residents. The Driver / Team Leader is responsible for driving collection vehicles, supervising the collection crew, ensuring safe working practices, and maintaining professional standards when representing the Council.

Overview of a Typical Day

• Carry out daily vehicle safety checks and report any defects.
• Drive refuse collection vehicles (RCVs) and other waste collection vehicles on scheduled routes.
• Lead and support the collection team to complete daily recycling and waste collections safely and efficiently.
• Monitor collection standards, including correct recycling procedures, contamination checks, PPE compliance, and safe handling of waste.
• Communicate with supervisors regarding route issues, hazards, delays, or service problems.
• Ensure vehicles, equipment, and documentation are maintained correctly.
• Support other operational duties when required, including emergency response, severe weather activities, and occasional loading or street cleaning duties.

Key Skills / Responsibilities

• Hold a clean LGV Category C driving licence and maintain a valid CPC.
• Experience driving large vehicles and working in a similar waste, recycling, or operational environment.
• Ability to lead and motivate a team effectively.
• Good understanding of health and safety procedures and safe working practices.
• Strong communication skills with colleagues and members of the public.
• Ability to work independently and make decisions when required.
• Ensure collections are completed professionally, efficiently, and safely.
• Maintain vehicle cleanliness, complete required checks, and report incidents or defects.
• Promote teamwork, fairness, flexibility, openness, and kindness in line with Council values.
• Be flexible to work additional hours, weekends, bank holidays, or alternative duties when operationally required.

Stated Qualifications / Requirements

• Clean LGV Category C driving licence.
• Valid Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC).
• Relevant experience in a similar driving, waste, recycling, or team leader role.
• Experience supervising or supporting a team.
• Knowledge of health and safety responsibilities.
• Ability to undertake relevant training as required.
• Welsh language skills are desirable.

PAYE Pay Rate: £14.84 per hour

37 hours a week

WORK PATTERN:   Monday to Thursday 7am to 3pm, Friday 7am to 2.30pm including  bank holidays.
