About the role
Job Description
Apply your structural expertise to protect the safety of our borough’s buildings and communities
From complex commercial schemes to historic landmarks, structural integrity matters. As a Senior Structural Engineer, you’ll provide specialist technical oversight that ensures developments across the borough are safe, compliant and built to last.
What you’ll be doing:
You will assess building work, demolitions and temporary structures to ensure compliance with the Building Regulations and structural safety standards. Acting as the service’s structural specialist, you’ll provide expert advice on building control applications and enforcement investigations, making informed decisions grounded in professional judgement.
You’ll assess risks on site, determine appropriate action and implement immediate remedial measures to protect the public where required. Your expertise will also be used in assessing dangerous structures.
You’ll work closely with the Building Safety Regulator on Higher-Risk Building projects and manage a varied portfolio that includes major commercial developments, cultural institutions and the Council’s own property estate. You’ll provide clear and accurate technical guidance to architects, contractors, developers and residents, ensuring construction activities comply fully with legislative requirements.
Alongside your casework, you’ll contribute to the ongoing development of the service, supporting ISO 9001 quality standards and identifying ways to strengthen efficiency, consistency and technical excellence across Building Control.

What you’ll bring
You will be a Chartered member of a recognised professional body such as the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers. You’ll bring extensive experience reviewing and vetting structural designs within a construction, consultancy or regulatory environment.
A thorough knowledge of the Building Act 1984 and the Building Regulations 2010 is essential, alongside proven experience assessing structural risk and managing emergency incidents involving unsafe buildings.
You’ll combine strong technical judgement with clear communication skills, able to explain complex engineering principles in a way that is accessible and practical. You’ll be confident engaging with Clients, Principal Designers and Principal Contractors, managing professional relationships with credibility and authority.
You’ll demonstrate integrity, resilience and strong organisational skills, managing a diverse and demanding workload while maintaining high professional standards.
