About the role

Job Description

Strengthen building safety standards and lead the technical systems that keep our borough compliant

Safe buildings rely on strong systems and capable leadership behind the scenes. As a Senior Building Control Technician, you’ll supervise key processes and people, ensuring our Building Control service operates with accuracy, transparency and confidence.

What you’ll be doing:

You will supervise a team of Building Control Technicians, ensuring all applications, notices and certifications are managed accurately and in line with ISO 9001 standards and the requirements of the Building Safety Regulator.

A central responsibility will be overseeing the administration of the Building Safety Levy. This includes managing submissions, issuing statutory notices and taking appropriate enforcement action where regulations are not met. You’ll also take ownership of key financial processes, ensuring charges are issued and received correctly and overseeing phased payment arrangements for major applications across the borough.

You’ll maintain oversight of customer enquiries and performance data, monitoring service standards and identifying areas for improvement. Working closely with senior colleagues, you’ll support the embedding of new processes introduced following legislative changes and the Council’s response to the Grenfell Tower Public Inquiry.

Your role will also involve coordinating training activities aligned with the Building Inspector Competence Framework, responding to Freedom of Information requests and ensuring that governance, transparency and compliance remain at the heart of the service.

What you’ll bring

You will hold a Level 3 qualification or have equivalent professional experience. Experience supervising staff or overseeing systems is essential, as you will be responsible for maintaining high standards and supporting your team to meet performance targets.

You will have a sound understanding of the building control regime and experience working within quality management standards, ideally in an ISO 9001 environment. Strong organisational skills and attention to detail are critical.

You’ll be a confident communicator, comfortable engaging with residents, contractors and internal colleagues. Intermediate IT skills are required, including experience using Microsoft Office and financial systems. Experience with GIS systems and interpreting building plans would be advantageous.

Most importantly, you’ll take ownership of your work. You’ll demonstrate integrity, professionalism and a commitment to data protection, equal opportunities and delivering a trusted public service.
