About the role
Role: SDI Associate Scientist
Location: Motherwell, Scotland
Hours: 37.5 hours per week
Pay: £12.71-£13.50 per hour, depending on experience
Contract: 12-month contract
An excellent opportunity has arisen for an SDI Associate Scientist to join an innovative Research & Development team on a one-year contract. You will work within Assay Development, Molecular R&D or Reagents R&D, taking ownership of laboratory experiments that support the development of novel diagnostic assays in a collaborative and fast-paced environment. Fully site based in Motherwell.

The Requirements
- Degree in Science or an equivalent professional or higher education qualification
- Proven hands-on experience working within a laboratory environment
- Confident carrying out experimental procedures with minimal supervision
- Strong numerical, analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and a methodical approach to laboratory work
- Good computer literacy and experience analysing scientific data
- Strong theoretical understanding of relevant scientific disciplines
- Working knowledge of GLP and GDP standards
- Understanding of Design Control, Health and Safety, biosafety, COSHH and risk management requirements
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Able to present scientific findings clearly to colleagues and cross-functional teams
- Proactive, curious and comfortable identifying errors or unusual results
The Role
- Plan and carry out small-scale experiments independently to support project objectives
- Assist with the design and development of complex experiments and diagnostic assays
- Support projects within Molecular, Reagents or Assay Development R&D
- Analyse experimental data and produce clear technical conclusions and recommendations
- Deliver summaries and findings within agreed project deadlines
- Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment in line with defined procedures
- Coordinate with external suppliers where equipment servicing or support is required
- Maintain accurate laboratory notebooks and records in accordance with Good Documentation Practice
- Act as a laboratory notebook reviewer where required
- Draft standard operating procedures and non-conformance reports
- Identify errors, unexpected results and opportunities for protocol improvement
- Suggest practical and innovative solutions to improve test methods
- Present work summaries during team and cross-functional meetings
- Contribute positively to team morale and collaborative working
- Ensure all work complies with relevant quality, regulatory and safety requirements
