About the role

SEN Teaching Assistant (Long-Term / Ongoing)

Location: Boston Spa area, West Yorkshire

Pay: Competitive daily rate

Contract Type: Full-Time / Long-Term (Ongoing)

Start Date: September 2026

Are you an experienced and dedicated teaching assistant passionate about empowering pupils with complex learning needs? Do you possess the energy, resilience, and creativity required to help young people achieve meaningful learning outcomes? Are you seeking a stable, long-term educational role starting this September in an outstanding specialist setting?

If so, Randstad Education wants to hear from you. We are currently recruiting a proactive SEN Teaching Assistant for an ongoing, long-term placement within an exceptional, purpose-built specialist school in the Boston Spa area.

About the School

They are an outstanding, state-of-the-art specialist provision supporting children and young people aged 2 to 19 with a wide spectrum of complex learning needs. These include severe learning difficulties (SLD), profound and multiple learning difficulties (PMLD), autism spectrum conditions (ASC), and social, emotional, and mental health (SEMH) requirements. They pride themselves on delivering a highly individualised, multi-sensory curriculum within world-class facilities-including specialist hydrotherapy facilities, sensory suites, and custom outdoor environments. By fostering a collaborative atmosphere alongside families, therapists, and specialist educators, they ensure every pupil develops independence, confidence, and effective communication skills in a safe and nurturing setting.

Role and Responsibilities

In this long-term position, you will work consistently with dedicated class teams to provide stable, continuous support to young learners. Your key duties will include:

  • Delivering tailored learning support aligned with individual Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) targets, adapting tasks to meet varied learning speeds and styles.

  • Utilising alternative and augmentative communication methods-such as PECS, Makaton, and visual timetables-to aid pre-verbal and non-verbal pupils, while assisting with physical mobility and personal care routines where required.

  • Guiding children through sensory breaks, quiet-space routines, and positive behaviour support strategies during periods of overwhelm or anxiety.

  • Working closely alongside lead teachers, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists, and healthcare staff to maintain a cohesive care and learning framework.

  • Encouraging personal autonomy, social interactions during mealtimes, and smooth, confident transitions between daily activities.

Skills Required
  • Prior practical experience supporting children or young adults with SLD, PMLD, autism, or complex physical and learning needs.

  • Practical familiarity with visual schedules, communication boards, symbol support systems, or basic Makaton.

  • A grounded, empathetic, and calm approach, with a strong understanding of non-verbal cues and behaviour as a form of communication.

  • The commitment to build long-term relationships with pupils, colleagues, and multidisciplinary support teams.

Essential Requirements
  • Previous experience supporting children or young people with special educational needs (SEN) within the UK.

  • Full eligibility to work in the UK (please note, visa sponsorship is not available for this role).

  • An Enhanced DBS check registered on the Update Service, or a willingness to undergo a new check via Randstad.
