About the role

Systems Engineering Intern – Summer 2027

Join the D. E. Shaw group for a roughly 12-week systems engineering internship in London, expected to run from June to August 2027. You will contribute to the technology infrastructure of an established global investment and technology firm, working across software development, systems engineering and information security. Projects are aligned with interns’ interests and experience, providing exposure to real technical challenges and large-scale infrastructure. The programme offers an opportunity to develop your engineering knowledge while working alongside experienced colleagues in a collaborative environment.

About the D. E. Shaw Group

Founded in 1988, the D. E. Shaw group began with six employees and became an early pioneer in computational finance. Today, the firm employs more than 3,000 people around the world and operates a substantial global technology infrastructure.

The firm brings together people from a wide range of academic and professional backgrounds. Its work is shaped by analytical rigour, the open exploration of ideas and a focus on solving complex problems.

The Role

Engineers at the D. E. Shaw group design, develop and manage the firm’s global technology infrastructure.

During the internship, you will collaborate on a mixture of software development and infrastructure projects. This may involve creating technical solutions across Linux and Windows management, database infrastructure, application engineering, DevOps and information security.

Your work could include:

  • Developing full-stack web applications.
  • Building tools that help identify software vulnerabilities.
  • Administering infrastructure-level systems.
  • Improving the efficiency of different technology platforms.
  • Creating automation for operating system upgrades.
  • Optimising large-scale infrastructure operations.
  • Enhancing security information and event management systems.
  • Working with teams across Systems to develop and deploy a full-stack application for use across the firm.

Specific projects will be matched to your interests and previous experience.

Company Culture

The D. E. Shaw group promotes collaboration across disciplines, locations and areas of the business. Interns will join a collegial working environment where people are encouraged to explore ideas, communicate clearly and approach problems with analytical rigour.

The firm values creativity, intellectual curiosity, professional respect and contributions that support the organisation as a whole. Its aim is to provide challenging work, supportive colleagues and opportunities for continuous learning.

Benefits and Perks

  • Approximately 12 weeks of practical engineering experience.
  • Projects selected to reflect your interests and technical background.
  • Exposure to software development and large-scale technology infrastructure.
  • Opportunities to work with teams across the firm’s Systems function.
  • Support with housing for the duration of the internship.

Requirements

You should be enrolled in a computer science, computer engineering or another technical degree programme, or demonstrate comparable interests and relevant experience alongside a strong record of achievement.

You will also need:

  • A solid grounding in computer science, demonstrated through internships, personal projects or contributions to open-source platforms.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and intellectual curiosity.
  • Effective collaboration, communication, organisation and time-management abilities.
  • Knowledge of algorithms, software development and systems infrastructure.
  • The ability to use AI-assisted development tools effectively when coding in Python, JavaScript, Go or similar languages.

Practical experience with Windows, Linux or UNIX, cloud technologies, networking or information security would be useful but is not essential.

Applications are also welcomed from students currently completing a four-year undergraduate or postgraduate degree in another subject, provided they have relevant technical interests or experience. Applicants are typically approaching their final year of full-time study. Previous finance experience is not required.

Apply now to develop your systems engineering experience, contribute to meaningful technical projects and spend the summer working with the D. E. Shaw group’s technology teams in London.
