Join the D. E. Shaw group’s Systems team for a 12-month industry placement in London, gaining practical experience across the technology infrastructure that supports a global investment and technology development firm. You will contribute to project and support work involving operating systems, cloud services, communications platforms and computing infrastructure. Running from June 2027 to June 2028, the placement provides an opportunity to develop your technical, analytical and project management skills while working alongside experienced colleagues on systems used across the firm.

The Role

You will join the Systems team for a 12-month industry placement as a systems administrator.

You will be responsible for a mixture of project and support work across a wide range of technologies, including Windows PCs and servers, UNIX servers, mobile devices, storage and clustered computing solutions, and several communications platforms.

You will collaborate with other engineering teams to support and deploy both on-premise and cloud services. Your work may include troubleshooting complex technical issues, administering infrastructure-level systems and introducing automation or other improvements that increase efficiency.

The placement will take place in London and is expected to run from June 2027 to June 2028. Eligibility is subject to the firm reviewing any terms or conditions required by your university in relation to the placement.

Requirements

You should be enrolled in the penultimate year of a degree programme and eligible to complete an industry placement.

You will need basic knowledge of on-premise and cloud-based Microsoft enterprise environments, alongside a demonstrated interest in improving technology and processes. This could have been developed through previous internships, university helpdesk work, academic achievements or personal projects.

You should also have:

Excellent interpersonal, communication and project management skills
The ability to work effectively with global colleagues across different backgrounds, experiences and projects
Strong critical analysis and research skills, with the ability to solve unfamiliar problems
A curious and motivated approach to learning and work

Familiarity with general systems administration, Linux environments, Python, PowerShell or similar technologies would be useful but is not essential. Experience using AI-assisted development tools or AI automation techniques would also be beneficial.
