About the role

Job summary

No 2 Mechanical Transport Squadron (2 MT Sqn) is seeking an enthusiastic and motivated SO3 Driving Assurance to deliver and assure driver training, assure driver competence and manage transport compliance activities across the Squadron. This is a rewarding role at the heart of operational support, combining instructional responsibilities with safety assurance and regulatory compliance.

You will play a key role in delivering and ensuring compliant driver training, that statutory and Defence regulations are complied with, and that robust assurance processes are maintained to support operational effectiveness and road safety.

This position offers the opportunity to influence standards, improve training delivery, work closely with a wide range of stakeholders and contribute directly to the safety and readiness of Squadron personnel.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description

Reporting to Officer Commanding 2 MT Squadron, the SO3 Driving Assurance is responsible for the management and delivery of driver training and supporting assurance activities.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Managing and delivering driver training programmes, including initial, continuation and familiarisation training.
  • Assurance of driver competence, qualification status and regulatory compliance through monitoring of driver records and associated databases.
  • Acting as the Squadron focal point for driver training assurance and governance.
  • Managing tachograph compliance and drivers' hours monitoring in accordance with Defence and statutory requirements, using relevant management information systems.
  • Identifying trends, risks and areas for improvement, implementing corrective actions where required actively contributing to continuous improvement activities.
  • Acting as a Defence Trainer Supervisor where appropriately qualified to assess and support instructors in maintaining training standards.
  • Delivering training packages including Human Factors, Manual Handling and Diversity & Inclusion awareness.
  • Undertaking Defence Road Safety Advisor responsibilities and promoting safe driving practices across the organisation.
  • Supporting internal assurance activities and contributing to continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Advising managers and stakeholders on driver training, compliance and road safety matters.
  • Producing reports, statistics and management information to support decision-making.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD office, will also count towards this level of attendance. Person specification

We are looking for someone who can demonstrate:

Essential Criteria

  • Experience within MOD transport operations, logistics, driver training or safety assurance.
  • Knowledge of driver hours, tachograph regulations or transport compliance processes.
  • Experience of delivering driver training, coaching, instruction or workplace learning activities.
  • Experience of monitoring compliance against policies, procedures or regulatory requirements.
  • Experience of maintaining accurate records, databases and management information.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and influence a range of stakeholders.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of quality assurance, audit or governance activities.
  • A recognised defence instructional or training qualification.

Mandatory Qualifications

  • Full UK Driving Licence: Cat B & Cat C+E

Desirable Qualifications

  • Full UK Driving Licence: Cat D
  • ADR
