Role Summary
Responsible for delivering an efficient, effective, and customer-focused Environmental Warden service, ensuring compliance with legislation relating to dog control, animal welfare, and environmental enforcement. The role combines enforcement, public education, community engagement, and investigation to protect public health, promote responsible animal ownership, and improve environmental quality across the council area.

Key Responsibilities
Enforce legislation relating to dog control, animal welfare, and the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act through inspections, investigations, education, and enforcement activities.
Conduct investigations into environmental offences, gather evidence, issue warnings and legal notices, and prepare case files for prosecution in accordance with council policies and legislation.
Present evidence at court hearings and other legal proceedings when required.
Respond to reports of stray dogs by safely capturing, handling, identifying, and reuniting animals with their owners wherever possible while ensuring their humane treatment.
Assist with animal welfare investigations and respond to welfare concerns in accordance with relevant legislation and operational procedures.
Carry out humane euthanasia of stray or unwanted dogs where necessary and in line with approved procedures.
Deliver educational campaigns, promotional events, and community awareness initiatives to encourage responsible pet ownership, environmental responsibility, and healthier communities.
Provide advice, guidance, and information to residents, elected members, partner agencies, and other stakeholders on environmental and animal welfare matters.
Work collaboratively with local and regional organisations to support initiatives that improve community health, wellbeing, and environmental standards.
Manage a varied daily workload, prioritising incidents and service requests to meet performance targets and deliver high standards of customer service.
Handle difficult, confrontational, and potentially hostile situations professionally while adhering to lone working and health and safety procedures.
Ensure accurate handling, recording, and safeguarding of payments in accordance with council financial procedures.
Maintain responsibility for a council vehicle, carrying out daily safety inspections, ensuring cleanliness, and reporting defects promptly.
Work outside normal office hours when required to meet operational needs and emergency response requirements.
Comply with all council policies relating to health and safety, safeguarding, equality, customer service, and organisational values.
Promote a positive public image of the Council by delivering professional, impartial, and responsive services.
Knowledge and Skills
Sound knowledge of legislation relating to dog control, animal welfare, and environmental enforcement.
Strong investigative and enforcement skills with experience gathering evidence and applying legislation fairly and consistently.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage effectively with members of the public, partner organisations, and elected representatives.
Ability to manage challenging situations calmly, professionally, and confidently.
Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise workloads and meet deadlines.
Competent in the use of IT systems and specialist software for recording incidents, investigations, and enforcement actions.
Ability to work independently while contributing effectively as part of a wider team.
Awareness of political sensitivities and the importance of maintaining impartiality and professionalism.
