Job summary
This is an exciting opportunity for an Engineer with experience of RF systems to work on Defence projects.
The Electromagnetic Pulse Protection engineer will be part of the Defence Electromagnetic Authority (DEMA) Team, who deliver crucial Defence enterprise-wide services to enable military capability to use the electromagnetic spectrum globally. This role is primarily responsible for ensuring that Defence systems and platforms are protected against the effects of high-power Electromagnetic Pulses. You will join a team of 11, specialising in Electromagnetic Pulse Protection on Defence Assets in the UK.
Much of the unique knowledge and skills associated with this role will be gained in post, however, a comprehensive foundation and experience in Electromagnetic Pulse Protection will be required.
This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

Job description
Under guidance of the EM Protection Assistant Head, you could work across various Electromagnetic disciplines, but will specialise in the Electromagnetic Pulse Protection (EMPP), which is responsible for protection of critical Defence assets against weaponised EM threats. You will be supported by a Team Leader who'll provide direction and prioritisation on EM modelling tasks. The Electromagnetic Pulse Protection (EMPP) Engineer responsibilities include:
- Testing highly specialised military platforms and facilities using a range of electronic test equipment.
- Plan, organise and lead technical electromagnetic assessments and trials, and witness third party EMP trials, at various locations across the UK and occasionally abroad.
- Provide technical advice and guidance to MOD and Government customers. Contribute to the development of EMPP Defence Standards.
- Undertake line management, mentoring and countersigning tasks as required.
- Perform visual audits of EMP protection measures. Support and review technical EMP modelling exercises.
- Undertake learning, development and upskilling as required.
- Interaction with industry, international experts and policy teams to keep abreast of technical and policy changes in this area.
The role involves regular (heavy) manual handling activities and may occasionally require undertaking physically demanding tasks sometimes over distance and arduous terrain.
Person specification
This role would perfectly suit an enthusiastic engineer who would be motivated by the opportunity to work on unique and exciting engineering systems, platforms and facilities, the likes of which can not be experienced outside of this role.

- Able to build and maintain good working relationships with a wide range of personnel and act with integrity and discretion.
- Able to quickly assess information and make credible recommendations at pace.
- Security aware, with accurate attention to detail.
- Experience of using Office 365 applications.
- Excellent verbal and written skills (including technical report writing, verbal briefings and presenting)
- Able to make effective decisions and know when to seek advice or escalate issues.
Desirable :
- Lorry licence desirable category C1
- Level 3 in an engineering discipline, or demonstrable experience.
- IET or equivalent engineering membership.
This role will include travel away from home. During testing phases, the successful applicant will need to travel to other sites to conduct testing – this could be up to 2 weeks at a time spent working away but not more than an average of 2 weeks per month.
As part of this job role, there may be a requirement to undertake manual handling tasks.
If not already held, successful candidates will be required to obtain DV clearance prior to taking up employment.

Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and working from home as part of a non-contractual hybrid working arrangement. All office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to site capacity and any required workplace adjustments. Requirements to attend other locations for official business, or work in another MOD workplace, will also count towards this level of office attendance.
